Elisa Caldana:Falcon Of Karachi

27.4. - 5.5.2024

We are happy to invite you to the screening of Elisa Caldana’s new film "The Falcon of Karachi"

The artist's film focuses on the elusive identity of a singular falcon, an endemic species in Pakistan, India, and Myanmar. This species is slowly disappearing in the wild and has become a near-threatened species. The Laggar (also known as the lugger or jugger) has a reputation of being a minor falcon, an underdog lacking the memorable or spectacular qualities of other falcons within the same family, such as the Peregrine. Starting from the potential aesthetic possibilities of a falcon known simply as a brown falcon, "The Falcon of Karachi" portrays an impression of a Laggar while observing the human-animal relationships that emerge from the concrete actions of caretakers dedicated to wildlife preservation.

The film is screened on two weekends (duration 15 min):

- April 27th & 28th, from 14:00 to 16:00, with a cake from K0ira1

- May 4th & 5th from 14:00 to 16:00, followed by an artist talk at 16:00

An artist talk event will take place on Sunday, the 5th at 16:00, where Elisa Caldana will engage in a conversation about her work and the subject of human-bird relations with artist Vesa-Pekka Rannikko and bird scientists and researchers Anna Haukka & Sirke Piirainen.

Anna Haukka specializes in studying the species vulnerable to illegal and legal bird trade. Sirke Piirainen’s research focuses on examining what factors affect species' risk to be endangered. Vesa-Pekka Rannikko is a multidisciplinary artist whose works deal with the intermingling area between nature and culture.

The project is supported by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture under the Italian Council program (2023); and by the Mondriaan Funds, The Netherlands.
